A smoke plume presumably originating from Canadian wildfires and related pyroconvection has been observed by CALIOP space-borne lidar since mid August 2017. This plume was further transported towards Europe where it was observed at various lidar stations. At Haute-Provence Observatory (south of France), the plume was observed by LATMOS NDACC lidars since 24 August as several stratospheric layers, characterized by extreme values of scattering ratio and optical depth that have never been observed at OHP since the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991.
