Theory for the dynamics of a Saharan dust cloud

Sudden Saharan desert dust storms generate dust clouds over North Africa. In this region of prevailing easterly winds, these clouds migrate westwards floating in the lower half of the troposphere. The diabatic dust warming (DDW), due to the solar radiation absorption, drives an upper anticyclone and a lower anticyclone.
The dust cloud dynamics are analyzed in terms of the solution to a two-layer Gill model, and the cloud latitudinal migration is analyzed in terms of potential vorticity balance. Results show that the latitudinal narrow and longitudinal long dust clouds migrate further northwards than lat-lon wide-short clouds. This northwards migration is larger for clouds originated in a more northern position. An ambient easterly winds can displace the dust cloud over the Atlantic in ten days, reducing its northwards displacement.
The impact on the dust cloud trajectory due to the presence of a lower frictional Ekman layer and of the Saharan heat low (SHL) are also analyzed. Results show that the latitudinal displacement increases in the presence of the Ekman pumping and that dust clouds originated to the south (north) of the SHL have a smaller (larger) northwards displacement.

The Montreal Protocol, enacted to prevent ozone depletion from human activity, halted declines in column-integrated ozone in the 1990s; the upper stratosphere is recovering, but lower stratospheric trends are unknown. I will present clear evidence that lower stratospheric ozone continues to decline, preventing total ozone recovery. This result contradicts expectations and, with no clear understanding of why this trend has emerged, implies that the problem of ozone depletion is not yet fully solved. The decline may impact future estimates of ozone layer recovery, the stratospheric response to climate change, radiative climate forcing, ozone exchange between the stratosphere and troposphere, and surface levels of ultraviolet radiation.

Lundi 20 novembre 2017 à 11h LATMOS site UPMCSalle de réunion 411, tour 45-46, 4ème étage On the Nexus between Carbon Cycle and Air Quality: Exploring Multiple Constraints on Anthropogenic Combustion and Fires Ave Arellano University of Arizona It is imperative that we provide more accurate and consistent analysis of anthropogenic pollution emissions at scales that is relevant to air quality, energy, and environmental policy. Here, we present several proof-of-concept studies that explore observational constraints from ground, aircraft, and satellite-derived measurements of atmospheric composition on bulk characteristics of anthropogenic combustion in megacities and fire regions. We focus on jointly analyzing co-emitted combustion products such as CO2, NO2, CO, SO2, and aerosols from GOSAT, OCO-2, OMI, MOPITT, IASI, GOME, and MODIS retrievals, in conjunction with USEPA AQS and NASA field campaigns. Each of these constituents exhibit distinct atmospheric signatures that depend on fuel type, combustion technology, process, practices and regulatory policies. Our results show that distinguishable patterns and relationships between the increases in concentrations across the megacity or large fire events due to emissions of these constituents enable us to: a) identify trends in combustion activity and efficiency, and b) reconcile discrepancies between state- to country-based emission inventories and modeled concentrations of these constituents. For example, the trends in enhancement ratios of these species reveal combustion emission pathways for China and United States that are not captured by current emission inventories and chemical reanalysis. Analysis of their joint distributions has considerable potential utility in current and future integrated constituent data assimilation and inverse modeling activities like in CAMS for monitoring, verifying, and reporting emissions, particularly for regions with few observations and limited information on local combustion processes. By carrying out model simulations from the Community Earth System Model (CESM), I quantify the effect of coupling the stratospheric ozone chemistry onto the model's sensitivity to solar and anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHG). I will show that interactive stratospheric ozone reduces the model response to GHG and solar forcing, albeit through two different mechanisms. Accordingly, stratospheric ozone responses yield an important and yet undocumented negative feedback in the climate system.

Lundi 16 octobre à 11h LATMOS site UPMCSalle de réunion 411, tour 45-46, 4ème étage Global Budget of Reactive and Dissolved Organic Carbon Par Sarah Safieddine ; Massachusetts Institute of Technologynow at LATMOS The cycling of reactive organic carbon (ROC) is central to tropospheric chemistry, driving the oxidative chemistry of the atmosphere, affecting the hydroxyl radical concentrations, and methane lifetime. In this presentation, the global tropospheric ROC budget as simulated with the GEOS-Chem model is presented. This budget is an expansion of the standard simulation, that includes new emissions and gas-phase chemistry, an extension of dry and wet removal mechanism, and a mass tracking of all ROC species to achieve carbon closure. The presentation will then focus on the wet deposition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the largest physical removal pathway of ROC. No previous global assessment of the composition and global distribution of DOC has been presented to date. Here, we investigate the simulated DOC composition, spatial distribution, and evolution in the global atmosphere, and compare these with historical DOC measurements.

Mardi 26 septembre 2017 à 11h LATMOS site Guyancourt Salle de réunion 2202 Pluto's atmosphere: our view after New Horizons par Leslie Young Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, USA Pluto's atmosphere is mainly N2 with minor amounts of CH4 and CO, sourced from their surface ices. Photochemistry leads to nitriles (e.g., HCN) and small hydrocarbons (C2H2, C2H4, C2H6), which lead to hazes measured below 200 km. It is expected that KBO dust introduces H2O into the atmosphere. CH4 and N2 escape via enhanced Jean's escape - not by the expected hydrodynamic escape because the low temperatures seen in Pluto's upper atmosphere. HCN, H2O, and C2H6 have all been implicated in the low temperatures seen in Pluto's upper atmosphere. Temperatures in the middle atmosphere are controlled by radiative balance between CH4, CO, and possibly hydrocarbons and H2O. In the lower atmosphere, thermal conduction carries energy down through a very steep thermal gradient from the ~105 K atmosphere to a small boundary layer near 38 K over N2 ice, and somewhat warmer surface over bare areas. Observed clues to atmospheric dynamics on Pluto include the boundary layer, a small eddy diffusion coefficient, homogeneity of composition at the two locations probed by the the New Horizons solar occultation, and the observed latitudinal variation of the haze brightnesss. Global circulation models are used to predict winds. Puzzles remain, some of which can be addressed with ground-based observations.

L’isolement et l'€™hostilité du continent font que les mesures in-situ demeurent rares, et donc précieuses pour ce continent une fois et demi plus grand que l’Europe. Mieux contraindre les propriétés microphysiques de ces nuages est primordial pour améliorer leur représentation dans les modèles atmosphériques. Les nuages déterminent les précipitations qui affectent le bilan de masse de glace du continent, ils modifient le bilan radiatif dont la bonne connaissance est requise pour contraindre les températures de surface, notamment des barrières de glace et des glaciers. Impactant les températures, les nuages affectent également les gradients méridionaux de températures et donc les circulations aux plus basses latitudes.Des campagnes de mesures in-situ ont été réalisées par le British Antarctic Survey (BAS) sur la Péninsule Antarctique durant les étés 2010 et 2011, et plus récemment dans la région de Halley VI, à l’Est de la mer de Weddell, en Novembre-Décembre 2015.Apres avoir introduit les connaissances et problématiques liées aux nuages troposphériques en Antarctique, je présenterai les observations et les résultats obtenus jusqu'à présent grâce aux campagnes de mesures in-situ du BAS, et détaillerai davantage la dernière campagne de mesures effectuée en 2015 à Halley. Je présenterai également les travaux de simulations méso-échelle entrepris avec Polar WRF dans le cadre de ces campagnes afin d’offrir de nouvelles pistes pour améliorer la modélisation microphysique de ces nuages. Mégie Par François Costard, Directeur de Recherche au GEOPS (Orsay, 91) Résumé : La présence de ravins alignés et sinueux, formés dans le sol gelé de la planète rouge dans la région d'Utopia Planitia, serait le témoin de probables écoulements situés à 150 mètres sous la surface. L’observation de reliefs similaires sur Terre dans l’arctique canadien, ainsi qu'une modélisation numérique viennent étayer cette hypothèse. Un ancien dépôt de poussière aurait fait office de couche isolante et favorisé ainsi la fonte du sol gelé sous-jacent. L’eau liquide ainsi créée aurait engendré un vaste réseau de rivières souterraines qui se serait maintenu même si les conditions thermodynamiques de pression et de température n’étaient pas forcément favorables en surface. Vendredi 8 avril 2016 à 11h00Université Pierre et Marie CurieSalle de réunion 411 du LATMOS, tour 45-46, 4ème ètage=============================================================== The Mid-Holocene West African Monsoon Modulated by Land Surface Cover and Saharan Dust Gabriele Messori, UK Met Office The West African Monsoon plays a fundamental role in the socio-economic stability of a large part of Africa, and changes in the monsoon’s location and intensity can have a severe impact on the local populations. Climate models struggle to successfully simulate both the present-day and historical monsoon variability, such as the monsoon’s intensification and northward extension during the mid-Holocene (6000 yrs BP). Understanding the reasons behind this shortcoming is an essential step to improve projections of the future monsoons.This presentation discusses whether the discrepancies between model simulations and paleo-data for the mid-Holocene can be attributed to prescribed initial conditions, with a focus on the role of land cover and dust loading in the atmosphere. It is found that land cover has a profound impact on the hydrological cycle of North Africa, with dust emission triggering complex feedback loops. The monsoon’s duration, intensity and geographical extent are all sensitive to the combined action of land cover and dust loading changes over the Sahel and Sahara. Since both dust loadings and land cover are expected to change in the future, an assessment of their impacts on precipitation is extremely valuable for our understanding of both the past and future climate of North Africa.

After a brief introduction to the method and its strengths and limitations, I will share scientificfindings on the role of heterogeneous chemistry and vertical mixing on bromine monoxide (BrO) events in the Arctic.We have recently begun deriving cloud and aerosol vertical profiles from these observations and will highlight collaborativeopportunities for research between these ground-based observations, modeling, and satellite-based observations.

Mercredi 21 septembre 2016 Ã 11h LATMOS site Guyancourt Salle de réunion 2202=============================================================== Studying gravity waves and turbulence in the stratosphere using satellite observations of stellar scintillation Viktoria Sofieva Finnish Meteorological Institute, Helsinki Stellar scintillations observed through the Earth atmosphere are caused by air density irregularities generated mainly by internal gravity waves (GW) and turbulence. The strength of scintillation measurements is that they cover the transition between the saturated part of the gravity wave spectrum and isotropic turbulence. This allows visualization of gravity wave breaking and of resulting turbulence. We analyzed the scintillation measurements by GOMOS fast photometers on board the Envisat satellite in order to quantify GW and turbulence activity in the stratosphere. The analysis is based on reconstruction of GW and turbulence spectra parameters by fitting the modeled scintillation spectra to the measured ones. For data interpretation, we use a two-component spectral model of air density irregularities: the first component corresponds to the gravity wave spectrum, while the second one describes locally isotropic turbulence resulting from GW breaking and other instabilities. In this presentation, we show global distributions, seasonal and interannual variations of the GW and turbulence spectra parameters retrieved from GOMOS data. Since other measurements at such small scales are very scarce in this altitude range, the obtained global distributions provide unique and complementary information about small-scale air density irregularities in the stratosphere.

Comparisons of Terra/MOPITT carbon monoxide (CO) and IASI/MetopCO observation assimilations will be presented. We use the DART EnsembleAdjustment Kalman Filter to assimilate observations in the CAM-Chem globalchemistry-climate model. Data assimilation impacts due to both differentinstrument capabilities (i.e. vertical sensitivity and global coverage)will be discussed. Coverage is global but sparse, often with largeuncertainties in individual measurements that limit examination of localand regional atmospheric composition over short time periods. This hashindered the operational uptake of these data for monitoring air qualityand population exposure, and for initializing and evaluating chemicalweather forecasts. By the end of the current decade there are plannedgeostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellite missions for atmosphericcomposition over North America, East Asia and Europe with additionalmissions proposed. Together, these present the possibility of aconstellation of geostationary platforms to achieve continuoustime-resolved high-density observations of continental domains for mappingpollutant sources and variability on diurnal and local scales. We describeObserving System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) to evaluate thecontributions of these GEO missions to improve knowledge of near-surfaceair pollution due to intercontinental long-range transport and quantifychemical precursor emissions. Yerevan, Armenia     Acceleration and multiplication of the ambient electrons of cosmic rays by strong electric field in the thunderclouds is well-established phenomena comprising the core of the atmospheric high-energy physics. Particle fluxes, cloud electrification and lightnings are usually correlated: lightning can abruptly terminate particle flux from a thunderclouds; huge particle showers initiated by high-energy proton or fully stripped nuclei accelerated in Galaxy possibly make enough ionization to help lightning leader to reach the ground. We add to lightning research new key evidence - Thunderstorm ground Enhancements (TGEs), i.e. enhanced fluxes of electrons, gamma rays and neutrons detected by particle detectors located on Earth’s surface. Synchronized observation of TGEs and atmospheric discharges facilitates investigations of the long- standing lightning initiation problem. Results of recent observations on Mt.Aragats will be presented and discussed.

Séminaire LATMOS Mercredi 16 mars 2016 à 11h, au LATMOS-Guyancourt, salle 2202 Modélisation 3D des nuages et des brumes sur la Terre primitive et les exoplanètes par Benjamin Charnay (University of Washington, Seattle, Etats-Unis) Durant l’Archéen, il y 3.8 à 2.5 milliards d’années sur Terre, l’insolation solaire était 20-25% plus faible qu’aujourd’hui. Avec l’atmosphère actuelle, la Terre aurait dû tomber dans une glaciation globale. Cependant la présence de minéraux hydratés et de roches sédimentaires révèle que l’eau liquide s’écoulait à la surface de la Terre durant presque toute son histoire. Ceci constitue le paradoxe du Soleil faible. Il a été proposé que des rétroactions nuageuses ou des différences sur la taille des gouttelettes nuageuses ont aidé à maintenir un climat tempéré en complément d'une plus forte concentration en CO2. Il a également été proposé que l’atmosphère archéenne était très riche en méthane produisant un fort effet de serre. Cependant, pour des concentration trop élevée en méthane, des brumes organiques se forment et peuvent entrainer une refroidissement planétaire. Les nuages et les brumes ont donc pu jouer un rôle majeur sur le climat de la Terre primitive. Il semblerait également que la plupart des exoplanètes, comme par exemple la mini-Neptune GJ1214b, sont couvertes de nuages affectant notre capacité à caractériser leurs atmosphères. Nous avons développé au LMD un modèle de climat (GCM) générique destiné à simuler les atmosphères primitives et les exoplanètes. Durant ce séminaire, je présenterai mes travaux avec ce modèle 3D sur la résolution du paradoxe du Soleil faible sur Terre, ainsi que sur la formation de nuages/brumes sur les exoplanètes et la caractérisation de leur atmosphère.

Physico-chimie de la formation et de la déposition des aérosols organiques  dans les modèles de chimie-climat Mardi 8 mars 2016 à 10h Université Pierre et Marie CurieSalle de réunion 411 du LATMOS, tour 45-46, 4ème étage     Alma Hodzic Roux   (National Center for Atmospheric Research - Boulder, USA)   Les observations indiquent que les composés organiques constituent la majeure partie des aérosols submicroniques à l'échelle globale. Cependant, notre compréhension de leur cycle de vie dans l'atmosphère est encore incomplète et les modèles actuels ne parviennent pas à décrire leurs propriétés, en particulier pour les aérosols organiques secondaires (SOA) formés chimiquement. Cela entraîne de larges incertitudes sur l'effet des aérosols sur le climat et sur la santé humaine. J'explore ici la possibilité d'utiliser de nouvelles contraintes, provenant d'une chimie explicite et d'observations détaillées, pour réduire les incertitudes sur la modélisation du cycle de vie des SOA. Je me base pour cela sur le modèle de chimie explicite GECKO-A (Generator of Explicit Chemistry and Kinetics of Organics in the Atmosphere) qui permet d'étudier la chimie multi-générationnelle des composés organiques en phase gazeuse et leur contribution à la formation des SOA dans des environnements variés (par exemple en milieu urbain ou forestier, ou pour des cas idéalisés). Ce modèle me permet d'améliorer la représentation des processus de formation, de croissance et de dépôt dans les modèles de chimie-climat. Les résultats montrent que GECKO-A prévoit une croissance significative de la masse de SOA dans les panaches urbains et forestiers en comparaison des paramétrisations actuellement utilisées dans les modèles 3D. Ceci est lié à la formation de composés organiques moins volatils. Les résultats montrent également que les composés intermédiaires d'oxydation en phase gazeuse, qui sont mal représentés dans les modèles 3D, contrôlent la formation et le cycle de vie des SOA. Comparisons of Terra/MOPITT carbon monoxide (CO) and IASI/MetopCO observation assimilationsewill be presented. We use the DART EnsembleAdjustment Kalman Filter to assimilate observations in the CAM-Chem globalchemistry-climate model. Data assimilation impacts due to both differentinstrument capabilities (i.e. vertical sensitivity and global coverage)will be discussed. Coverage is global but sparse, often with largeuncertainties in individual measurements that limit examination of localand regional atmospheric composition over short time periods. This hashindered the operational uptake of these data foa monitoring air qualityand population exposure, and for initializing and evaluating chemicalweather forecasts. By the end of the current decade there are plannedgeostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellite missions for atmosphericcomposition over North America, East Asia and Europe with additionalmissions proposed. Together, these present the possibility of aconstellation of geostationary platforms to achieve continuoustime-resolved high-density observations of continental domains for mappingpollutant sources and nariability on diurnal and local scales. We describeObserving System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) to evaluate thecontributions of these GEO missions to improve knowledge of near-surfaceair pollution due to intercontinental long-range transport and quantifychemical precursor emissions. Our approach uses an efficient computationalmethod to sample a high-resolution global GEOS-5 chemistry Nature Run overeach geographical region of the GEO constellation.
